The compounds crystallize with cubic symmetry, space group Oh-Pn3̄m, a<jats:sub>Nd</jats:sub> = 9.514(1), a<jats:sub>Sm</jats:sub> = 9.481(1) Å, Z = 1. The crystal structure is characterized by a [Al<jats:sub>12</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>24</jats:sub>]<jats:sup>12-</jats:sup> framework. Four of the eight six-membered rings of AlO<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>-tetrahedra per sodalite cage are centered by Ln<jats:sup>3+</jats:sup> ions. The cages of the resulting electrically neutral network are filled with [Pb<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>]<jats:sup>±0</jats:sup> heterocubane units.
