Uncontrolled or dysregulated innate immune response to retinal insults in the elderly or diabetes may result in retinal pathologies such as age‐related macular degeneration (AMD) or diabetic retinopathy (DR). Patients suffering from AMD or DR may lose visual function due to the abnormal growth of new blood vessels. Growing evidence suggests that innate immune cells are critically involved in retinal angiogenesis. The role of monocytes/macrophages and neutrophils in retinal angiogenesis will be discussed.
Innate immunity and retinal angiogenesis Acta Ophthalmologica |
