The pretreatment of sector as opposed to tip cultures in 5% glucose reduced the period required to 36 h from the previously lowest figure of 72 h. Excision of root tips caused a reduction in both cell division and enlargement whilst FUDR, hydroxyurea and colchicine reduced the effect of glucose on ageing. The results are discussed in terms of the hypothesis that cell division is required during the glucose treatment for ageing to be enhanced.
III.
