The standards committee seems to be heading to require as little as possible but to standardize as much as possible. There are, of course, proponents and opponents of each side of this path. The standard will also encompass as many machines as possible. Not only will the standard allow n-bitness (16-bit virtual systems minimum) but will also allow other than twos-complement machines (specifically discussed are ones-complement machines). Math has been unbound from floored-division and is now programmer specified as floored or rounded toward zero. Minimal floating point and files are also specified.
