It is shown that the multiple‐integral expression for the surface displacement ζ is reducible to one which is correct to terms of order <jats:italic>O</jats:italic>(ν'), ν' = ν/(4<jats:italic>gh</jats:italic><jats:sup>3</jats:sup>)<jats:sup>1/2</jats:sup>, for small coefficient of viscosity ν, under certain conditions.
